Referential vs. morphosyntactic gender agreement of pronouns in thought reports: An experimental investigation
In this talk, I present and discuss the results of two experimental studies in which we tested the claim made by Hinterwimmer & Harris (2024) that pronouns matching the referential rather than the morphosyntactic gender of DPs with hybrid nouns referring to the protagonist whose thoughts are rendered are strongly preferred in Free Indirect Discourse, while in indirect discourse both options are available, just as in the case of pronouns picking up discourse referents introduced by DPs with hybrid nouns in standard narration.
